Alas…Don Sweets becomes a [harsh] reality + recipes!

The one other day I look forward to besides “back-to-school” shopping…

What is this amazing day, you might ask? It’s a dessert-lover’s dream…or in other words, one step closer to a decadent utopia.

The Dons (or Residence Assistant or “Mommy/Daddy” of  residence) play around with the word “suite” to create an open-door “sweet” event for all residents.

Our theme this year is “Around the World”, and so, residents travel from one Don-suite to the next learning fun facts on each respected country (France, Mauritius, China, Spain, & USA) while collecting desserts.

Let’s just say, as a foodie, I’ve been dreaming of this day….for 3 years. I was born for this.

Except, cruel reality hit me. How could “Don Sweets” be anything but happiness? Why is it more stressful that exam week + cleaning my room + all the other  stressful things?!

First of all, which recipes shall I choose? As a recipe-fiend, I’ve only had time to collect rather than make. Luckily after a few days of reflection, I decided upon (click on the links for the recipes):

Cornflake-Marshmallow-Chocolote-Chip Cookies by Christina Tosi

Cornflake Chocolate Chip Marshmallow Cookies

Gluten-Free/Vegan Chocolate Cake Balls by Oh She Glows

GF/V Chocolate Cake Pops

Vegan Carrot Ginger Cake by Desserts for Breakfast

Carrot

Gluten-Free Macaroon Cups by 5 second rule

D-House Macaroon

Pretty solid line-up I must say. Usually as a highly indecisive person, I thought the hard part was over… It was only the beginning. Long cautionary tale short – no matter how early you prepare for something, don’t expect everything to go as planned.

In progress.

Work in progress.

Don Sweets was a good life lesson learned – often times you lose sight of what you enjoy doing when you restrict yourself for a certain outcome. Waiting three years to finally be an active part of Don Sweets became a constructed fantasy of how I wanted things to turn out. Unfortunately and fortunately, I discovered reality. That’s when flexibility and an open-mind comes to save the day. One burnt cookie isn’t the end of the day…a resident might even tell you that it gave a deeper depth of flavour to it!

On a side note, I am grateful to have been able to meet up with most of the Dons for a quick shot of their tables:

At the end of the day, I can say confidently that Don Sweets was a success!
